From Kyoto’s Gojo Rakuen Kaburenjo, these women have created a rich vision that pierces through the “here and now.” Fascinatingly elegant bridal robes (uchikake kimono) and evening gowns, kimonos tattered like rages, the old scenic art for symbols of luck… The performance of these bustling strange guises, while being penetrated by the artistic theory of Junichiro Takazaki’s “In Praise of Shadows,” and even considered as a punk revue, has delighted the eyes of young and old, men and women alike. Meanwhile, the act of displaying is combined with the act of concealing to guide the audience’s gaze while trifling with it. When we have passed through the doors at the junction of the known and unknown, Ima Tenko’s consummate skill is waiting for us. Eyes transparent as marbles; Muscles intricately divided, continuously wriggling. A different “truth” is reflected on that face each time. The previous performances “A Multitude of Treasures,” “Catch the Carp,” and “The Peacock Boat” have passed, and it seems the new work will ascend even higher.
